Film / Movie STILL ALICE 2014
Notable Actors Julianne Moore
Director Richard Glatzer Wash Westmoreland
Genre Domestic and personal irony creating family angst.
Film Locations Not that important
Synopsis Extremely bright academic woman interested in communication develops a disease that compromises her communication. Sound forced and contrived? Not really - is actually medically accurate.
Anyway, her decline reflects onto her family and their relationships - we get to see the real them. It's not going to end well...
Standout Feature Julianne Moore is as ridiculously brilliant as she was in Maps to the Stars 2014
Worst Feature It's a domestic film - meaning it shows normal people experiencing, what are in reality, common events. The settings are therefore bland, the directing is bland, the narrative is predictable.
Opinion Despite what I wrote in Worst Feature above, this is utterly a film to be watched by everyone. It will resonate with most of us - if not now, then in the next 10 years as people you know fall apart - either through age or disease.
Yes it is a "sensitive appraisal" of the disintegration of mental faculty - but Julianne Moore makes it a riveting experience. It doesn't matter the sets are mediocre, the supporting actors are free-wheeling or that the storyline is stuck on rails of inevitability.
Each scene has this beautiful and inspiring woman central stage - I couldn't take my eyes off her.
